Section 13: Flags and Signals
Signalling by flags or morse using the International code is a bit old hat nowadays but it is still used. It is commonplace to see a ship alongside a jetty flying RY (International Code two letter signal ‘Please keep clear at slow speed, I am taking on or discharging dangerous cargo’) or a vessel under way showing code flag H - ‘I have a pilot on board’. An outline knowledge of International Code signalling procedures is required and is covered in this section. General principles of flag etiquette are also covered
The section covers the following:
The International Code of Signals - how it works
Procedures for signalling by international code flags and morse
Life saving signals - the SOLAS no 2 card
Customs formalities
Flag etiquette - ensigns, burgees and house flags
